Our story begins a little over 100 years ago in 1899 with the Buehler family beginning to farm a small patch of land off the Spring River near Mount Vernon, Missouri in the heart of the Ozarks. We began with a small dairy production and grew traditional row crops such as corn, wheat, hay, and soybeans. After four generations of Buehler’s, David and Ann Buehler made the decision to diversify their crop base with a focus on elderberries and other therapeutic crops. After seeing family suffer from various health issues, this was their opportunity to make a difference in the health of their family as well as their community. They are still farming on their homestead (now over 450 acres!), as the cold water of the Spring River continues to nourish their land just like it did their ancestors.
We can only think about how much has changed since we first began farming and are excited to grow our next chapter as Elder Farms. Our name is rooted in the wisdom of using incredible plants like elderberry and hemp just like our elders used to. Now, as a Missouri Century Farm, the word Elder takes on a new meaning for us. By using the knowledge and wisdom of these incredible plants, we are excited to help reintroduce the fruits of these crops that our elders once relied on, for future generations to thrive.
